Asimat Jar Heral Seema: A Classic Assamese Novel by Kanchan Baruah




Asimat Jar Heral Seema (Assamese: অসমত যৰ হৰল সম; literally: Who lost Their Limit in Infinity) is an Assamese novel written by Bhubanmohan Baruah under the pen name of Kanchan Baruah. The first edition of this book was released on 15 July 1945. Kohinoor Theatre, a group of mobile theatre of Assam staged it in 2008. The novel is one of the literary gems of Assamese language which continues to rule the heart of lakhs of people.


The novel is a blend of fantasy, adventure, romance and patriotism. It narrates the story of five friends who embark on a boat journey along the river Dihing in search of an unknown land. On their way, they encounter a tribe of aboriginals, a violent storm, and a mysterious land where they relive their past lives as the inhabitants of Kamalnagar, a prosperous and peaceful province that was invaded and destroyed by a tyrannical king 1300 years ago. The novel explores the themes of reincarnation, karma, destiny, love, friendship, sacrifice and courage.

The novel has been translated into Bengali by Dr. Anamika Ray, a renowned media educator and researcher who passed away in 2015. The Bengali translation titled Ashime Jaar Haralo Seema was published posthumously by Dr. Anamika Ray Memorial Trust (ARMT) in 2023. The trust also published another Bengali translation of an Assamese novel 1962 by Rita Chowdhury, which depicts the plight of the Chinese-origin people in Assam during the Sino-Indian war.
